We're a small, specialist team working exclusively in Barnes and Putney — two of South West London's most garden-rich neighbourhoods. Every client gets a dedicated gardener who knows their plot intimately, season after season.
Whether you need a complete redesign or simply someone to keep things looking their best, we bring the same care and attention to every visit.
Full design for new gardens and thoughtful restoration of existing ones — from concept sketches to detailed planting plans.
Planting schemes that change with the year — always something in flower, something in leaf, something worth looking at.
Weekly or fortnightly visits from your own dedicated gardener. No rotas, no strangers — the same face, every time.
We come to you — a relaxed walk around the garden to understand what you have, what you love, and what you'd like to change.
A clear, honest proposal: what we'll do, when, and what it costs. No jargon, no surprises.
Design projects begin with drawings and plant selection. Maintenance clients get a care programme tailored to their garden.
Regular visits, seasonal updates, and an annual review to keep things evolving — and always looking their best.
Some people discover their true passion early in life. For Christopher Andrew, it took thirty years — and a successful career in financial services — to realise that gardens had been his greatest love all along.
After three decades working in the City, Chris made the decision to follow what had always brought him the most joy. He founded The Barnes Gardener to offer something he felt was missing in the area: genuinely personal, skilled garden care from someone who truly cares about the craft.
Having lived and gardened in South West London for many years, Chris knows Barnes and Putney intimately — the Victorian terraces with their long, shaded plots, the riverside gardens that need careful management, the wide leafy streets where a well-kept garden makes all the difference.
Beyond London, Chris has created a garden from scratch at his home in the Cévennes National Park in southern France — a wild, sun-drenched landscape that has deepened his understanding of plants, soil and the natural rhythms of a garden through the seasons.
He has also spent many years maintaining the garden at Rydal Mount in the Lake District — William Wordsworth's beloved home and one of England's most cherished historic gardens, open to the public for over fifty years. It is a responsibility Chris holds with great pride.
William Wordsworth's home in the Lake District from 1813 until his death in 1850. The four-acre garden — largely designed by Wordsworth himself — remains one of England's most important Romantic landscapes. Chris has maintained this remarkable garden for over fifty years of public opening.
"The garden remains close to Wordsworth's original vision — informal, harmonious with its natural surroundings, and full of quiet beauty around every corner."
